The corner of Webster Rd and State Highway 5 in Tirau, where there was an alleged arson on Sunday.
A 21-year-old man, who was known to the owner of the house, was arrested, police said. That man is due to appear in the Rotorua District Court on Monday, facing a charge of arson and a charge of assault.
Firefighters could see the glow of the fire as they left the station, Tīrau Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Jim Phillips said. The whole back of the single-storey Tīrau home was in flames when fire crews arrived, not long after 9pm on Sunday.
Water was a problem for the firefighters, Phillips said, and tankers had to be called in from Cambridge, Matamata, and Lake Okareka. Once they arrived, firefighters were able to control the fire quickly.
Multiple people had called Fire and Emergency about the fire, northern communications shift manager Murray Bannister said. No-one had been reported as being inside the house and the cause was not immediately clear, Bannister said on Sunday.
