A group of Rotorua's brightest stars have been honoured at the annual Rotorua District Council Community Awards.
Ten people received certificates at a ceremony at the district council last night, with adult and youth awards handed out at the annual ceremony that honours outstanding community service and recognises national and international achievements.
Youth-award winners were Declan Cudd from John Paul College, Te Waikamihi Korohina-Ormsby from Rotorua Girls' High School, dog handler Chelsea Marriner, karate exponent Charissa Rehu and Jordi Webber from Rotorua Boys' High School. Adult awards went to volunteer Mary Barton, actor Temuera Morrison, rural firefighter Philip Muldoon, Rotarian Owen Roberts and Rotorua Search and Rescue Squad volunteer Graham Douglas. Rotorua Deputy Mayor Trevor Maxwell said those honoured deserved recognition for making the city a better place in which to live.
"These fantastic people do a lot of work behind the scenes and some of them in front of the camera," Mr Maxwell said. "They all love Rotorua and they show everyone what community spirit really means. Even though he is my nephew, Temuera is passionate about promoting Rotorua and what it has to offer. Temuera is a homegrown product of Rotorua and will always be true, not only to himself, but also to Rotorua."
The Rotorua District Community Awards were introduced in 1992 and a youth section added in 1999. They differ from the TrustPower Spirit of Rotorua Awards that recognise outstanding contributions by voluntary organisations.
