Lake Okareka Rural Fire Force was presented with the national Fire and Rescue Services Industry Training Organisation [FRSITO] Excellence in Training Award for Volunteer Rural Fire Forces this week.
The presentation at Rotorua District Council [RDC], coincided with the beginning of the national Volunteer Awareness Week.
Lake Okareka Rural Fire Force was established over 25 years ago, and has 15 members ranging from 15 to 65 years old. RDC provides funding for equipment and maintenance, training, and NZQA qualifications.
Castlecorp business manager and acting principal rural fire officer, Mijo Katavic, says while the Lake Okareka team serves the Lake Okareka population of around 500, the council also relies on its crew to help Castlecorp staff at other fires around the district. Castlecorp is the council's maintenance business unit and coordinates rural fire fighting services for Rotorua District.
“The Lake Okareka volunteers do tremendous work, and receiving this award recognises the time they have to take away from their jobs, and disruptions to personal time.
“In undertaking their role, they make a strong commitment to training to achieve the level of skills and knowledge required to serve their community.”
