Well, what a wild, windy and wet so-called summer. Seems we went straight from spring to autumn.
The Fire Force has had sixteen call-outs to date this year, the majority of which have been weather-related.
Thank you to some quick-thinking locals who prevented a potentially serious accident from occurring due to subsidence on Okareka Loop Road, early one week-day morning. Not only was the incident called in to 111, but they also parked their car in a position to warn other residents on their way to work of this potential hazard until we arrived. A black hole in the road, approximately 1 metre deep and half a metre wide, at 6.30am is very hard to detect, especially in a 100km zone.
Also, thanks to those residents who call in the numerous wind-blown trees that have fallen and blocked the road. We can get these trees cleared well before any other authorities arrive, eliminating possible accidents from occurring.
Lake Okareka Rural Fire now has a Facebook page and website (www.okarekaruralfire.com). Thanks to Kierin Oppatt for setting up and maintaining these informative sites.
Kierin has also instigated a new sign for the front of the fire station. Special thanks to Speedy Signs for donating their time and expertise to provide the sign.
Last weekend saw members of the Fire Force donate three days to provide marshalls for the Oceania Mountain Bike Championships, as well as for the National Championships a couple of weekends prior. Thanks to Sandra Goodwin and Katie Herries who answered our request to the local community for additional marshalls, and also Warren and Robert Giles from Lake Tarawera. A substantial donation will be made to the Fire Force which shall be shared with the Tarawera Playcentre.
With winter on its way, now is the time to get your chimneys swept in time for those chilly nights. Also, remember to check your smoke detectors when daylight savings ends and be cautious when driving in icy conditions.
