LAKE OKAREKA VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE FORCE
With daylight savings almost over and temperatures dropping, I guess it’s farewell to summer and hello to winter yet again.
Time for my annual reminder about those frosty mornings again and the care needed when driving on icy roads. Fortunately, since the re-surfacing of the bend between the quarry and Tarawera Road, we have not attended any accidents there … and hopefully won’t in the future.
As some new residents are probably wondering, that loud wailing siren you heard at 2am a couple of weeks ago is our fire siren and, no, we don’t activate it ourselves. It is automatically switched on by “Fire Comms” in Auckland, as are our pagers. So spare a thought next time you hear it for the ‘poor sods’ who get elbowed awake and bundled out the door into the pouring rain, only to return hours later in need of some TLC and getting a cold shoulder instead.
Eight of our members recently attended a rope rescue course which ran over two days ‑ very challenging with some beneficial skills learnt. Thanks again to the Hall Committee for the use of the Community Hall.
We now have 23 fit, strong, young(ish) members who train every Wednesday night at 7.30pm, so if you need some extra manpower to shift that spa pool or grand piano, give me a call – I’d be only too pleased to volunteer the lads!!
A huge thank you to Jason Douglas, Mike Cotter and Dean Foster for an awesome donation to the brigade of $700 from the proceeds of the fishing competition. This will go towards a Zip hot water heater for the station. Further special thanks to Mike for providing the ‘after function’ entertainment!!
