Looking forward to winter? Yeah, right!
With the inevitable change of seasons soon to be upon us, a word of warning to those new residents who haven’t experienced an “Okareka” winter yet. The pretty, white stuff you’ll see on the road sides on those crisp, clear mornings usually means deadly black stuff on the road which can make retaining simple traction with the road a skill to test even the best of drivers. Take particular care on those corners that are sheltered from the sun.
Also, before you fire up the good old log-burner, be sure to get your fire cleaned. I got a 10 litre pail full of soot from my fire, and that was only after three months of use. Remember, if you do experience a chimney fire, a jug of water poured on the fire will result in steam going up the flue – this should have an immediate effect. Dial 111 as soon as possible and give clear, precise information to the operator. Please do not hesitate in getting your local brigade turned out – that’s what we’re here for. A local resident dialled 111 in similar circumstances and, upon our arrival, we discovered that a fire had started inside the wall cavity due solely to the radiant heat build-up. Left undetected, this would have proved catastrophic.
Your local brigade is in desperate need of volunteers, especially now that we have lost three members who have returned to university, and also the recent departure of Gareth Johns and the resignation of Peter Wilson. New members receive full training, full uniform, safety boots, overalls, etc. and the pleasure of my company for a couple of hours every Wednesday night. Come and learn some valuable new skills.
