LAKE OKAREKA VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE FORCE
Well, we’re almost at the shortest day and the winter bite has truly set in over the last few weeks. Look out for black ice on the roads, especially around the Blue Lake. Even if it’s foggy in Okareka, the roads can still be icy along by the farms and the water tank hill. Also, take care on the wet days when the roads get greasy.
Not so long ago the brigade responded to a rather serious incident in the village which required a section of road to be closed off to traffic for an extended period of time. While most people accepted this as a necessary precaution, it is regrettable that a few locals got a little irate and chose to vent their frustrations on some of the brigade members. Please be assured that we take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the public first and foremost, and do not set out to deliberately create inconvenience. Special thanks to those in the surrounding neighbourhood who provided tea, coffee and food to the crew while we attended to the situation. This was most welcome given that most of the boys had not had breakfast before the call-out.
Please don’t hesitate to get the brigade called out to any emergency. We are only minutes away and can even assist with medical situations. Remember, the fire truck is equipped with oxygen and a defibrillator unit.
