Well, Summer is fast approaching – long hot sunny days, no rain, except for the odd shower at night to keep the gardens and the bush fresh and green, BBQ’s under total control, tourists driving camper vans slowly and on the correct side of the road, rental cars obeying all traffic laws and not stopping without warning – “all pigs fueled up and ready to fly”
Yes it’s that time of year again — the time to be EXTRA vigilant when on the roads, especially around our beautiful lakes areas and tourist spots. Remember the restricted fire season applies to Okareka — so if you want to burn garden rubbish, then please contact the Dept of Conservation and get a “Fire Permit” BEFORE you “strike a match”.
If you don’t and your fire gets out of control you will receive a visit from a large red fire engine plus 6 firemen at no extra charge. As a bonus you will also receive a small red fire engine with 4 firemen aboard, also from Lake Okareka. BUT wait there is more — you will also receive a Scania fire engine from the NZ Fire Service with untold firemen aboard. If you don’t have the permit then you will receive from DOC a BILL of several thousands of $$$$$ — no charge of course for the excitement you will have caused.
In the meantime I hope you all enjoyed the Firemens Ball, held recently at the local Hall — I understand Ian Bowyer is available to present his “Firepower Okareka” act at functions & parties, etc.; Peter Harding has recently completed his National Crew Certificate, and achieved the highest mark ever awarded in New Zealand — congratulations Peter. Keith Palmer & Graham Osbourne have both been in hospital recently, but are now on the way to recovery. We wish them both “get well soon.” The new Training Room & Extension to the Fire Station will soon begin construction.
We were called out at 9:45pm, 5th November to a scrub fire located between the Blue Lake & Okareka which was considered to have been intentionally lit. If anybody witnessed or saw anything suspicious in the general area around 9:30pm, then please contact the Police.
Remember, you are very welcome to come visit us at the Fire Station. Presently we are still training each 2nd Wednesday, BUT if the Fire Danger increases through the summer months then we shall have training each Wednesday — which will put us in good shape for the 3-Way Lakes Fire Competition to be held at Rotoiti, early in 1996 — so do come on down. We will be getting our teams for this competition very soon.
In closing: “If you are going to invite us to your place this summer & festive season — then make sure it’s for a drink and not to put out a fire.”
