Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - September 2004

Greetings, once again.

To date, this year has been a very busy one for your local fire brigade. Not only have we had a record number of callouts, but we have also been occupied with the acquisition and fitting out of a new fire appliance.

As we have attended several motor vehicle accidents recently, with the majority being up by the quarry on Loop Road, it is good to see that the Council have finally ‘roughened’ the road surface on and around several notorious corners. Hopefully, this will improve traction in this area. Caution is still required for those would-be Michael Schumachers out there.

The fishing competition was very successful. A lot of organising was involved, however, the outcome and the community support towards the fire brigade means that we look forward to hosting the competition again next year. Who knows, all those fish I ‘purposefully’ didn’t catch this year will only get bigger for me next year. Thank you to those who assisted and also those who supported this event.

I would also like to thank those residents who take the time to phone and inform me that they are about to light rubbish fires on their properties.

As always, new recruits (male and female) are more than welcome - especially now, as I have four recruits who are due to start a basic firefighting course shortly. So, come on - don’t be shy, give it a try!

For further information on the brigade or any other enquiries, please don’t hesitate to call me (Phone 362 8874).
