The end of an era has arisen for the Lake Okareka Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade. It is with sadness that we farewell Dave Field as Chief Fire Officer. Dave was a founding member of the brigade and his involvement goes back some 20 years. We are grateful for the valued contribution he has made to the community over these years and thank him for his personal commitment.
I have been appointed as Dave’s replacement. He has certainly left some big boots for me to fill (I guess I’ll have to wear extra socks).
The last six months have been very busy for the brigade. As you may or may not know, from 1st October, existing brigade members must hold relevant unit standards approved by the NZQA. This is a nationwide requirement for all volunteer brigades. All our registered members have undertaken training through the Rotorua District Council and attained the necessary qualifications. These vary from basic firefighting, chainsaw use and first aid to emergency vehicle driving and crew boss level. This is a great way to achieve new skills and gain qualifications.
New recruits are always welcome - all you need is a reasonable level of fitness and to be full of it (enthusiasm that is)!
The brigade members have also been busy constructing a training room in the station. Special thanks to Tristan Hall for wiring the new room and the Playnes for donating carpet. If anyone has a table they could donate, this would be greatly appreciated.
For further information on the brigade or any other enquiries, please don’t hesitate to call me (Phone 362 8874).
Until next time –
Phil Muldoon
