Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - June 1999

G’day

You may have noticed a change in our fire truck recently. Our Toyota and our Ford are both in for repairs and servicing, and whilst this is going on, we have a replacement vehicle from the New Zealand Fire Service. The Toyota has a leaking radiator, and the Ford is in for its regular service — every 7 years, whether it needs it or not!!

It has been a quiet period for us recently — no major incidents to report. However, it’s good to welcome back some of the members of the Fire Force who have not been available for a while due to work and family commitments.

We have our AGM on 7 July and we would be pleased to see as many as possible at the fire station on that night. We will keep the formal business part as brief as possible because there are a number of issues I would like to discuss regarding the future of RDC, NZFS, NRFA and Lake Okareka Fire, since the present situation is one of total confusion.

For example, recently, a representative of Valuation NZ asked for access to the fire station to check on our improvements that have been made. When asked why, we were told he was working for RDC, who were revaluing their assets, including Okareka Fire Station and Tarawera Fire Station. Now, as we all know, Lake Okareka and Tarawera buildings were built by voluntary labour and fundraising by the local community and do not have anything to do with RDC. I am sure you will be as concerned as I am by this development, and I would like as much info as possible from the community on this and other matters of concern.

Hope to see you there.

Dave Field
Chief Fire Officer
