Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - June 1997

During June, we have undergone an intensive training programme with New Zealand Fire Service in Rotorua. This has covered house fires, motor vehicle accidents, rescue operations and a whole range of emergency situations as well as forest and scrub fires. We were extremely pleased to be congratulated by New Zealand Fire Service on the good standard and range of our equipment, our present level of training and commitment to providing a service to the community. (Well, if we don’t blow our own trumpet – who will?)

You might not be aware that our “patch” covers Tarawera Road from Reservoir Hill to the Buried Village, all of Okareka village, including the far end of Millar Road and Crater Lake Farm, and a large amount of bush and forestry adjacent to these areas. We also cover the quarry and all of Loop Road, the Blue Lake Motor Camp, the Blue and Green Lake area and the far side of Lake Okareka, including Playne’s farm.

We have, once again, 3 vacancies for 3 people in the 25–45 age group, due to changes in the circumstances of some of the present crew. I would remind everybody that we are a local volunteer organisation, here primarily to look after your interests and safety, so if anybody in the community is interested in joining up – please phone me on 3628-105 – I’ll be most happy to hear from you.
