It seems winter is well and truly upon us. Chimneys swept? Gas fires checked? Electric blankets inspected and tested? I hope so, because I am sure you don’t want us paying an unexpected visit to your place!
For those of you spending your first winter in Okareka, remember that rural roads can be icy in the mornings – particularly around the Blue Lake and at the top of the
Loop Road between the quarry entrance and Tarawera Road. So, if there is any sign of frost about, just take that extra little bit of care.
As I am sure you know, we are a local volunteer organisation and we are always looking for new members – male or female! So, if you want to give something back to your community, why not think about joining us – better still, come along to the Fire Station any Wednesday at 7.30pm and find out what we are all about.
If you are over 16 years of age, averagely fit and healthy and you want to know more, please feel free to call Phil on 3628 874 or Dave on 3628 105.
For those keen on fishing at this time of year, the Lake Okareka Fishing Competition will be held on 16 and 17 July. Registration will take place at the Fire Station on the evening of Friday 15th. It’s a great event for the serious and not-so-serious fishermen (and women), and a fun two-days for families. Young and old alike, come along and join in. You never know your luck!
Take care until next time.
Phil Muldoon
Chief Fire Officer
