Well, June already and here comes winter. Don't forget - clean those chimneys, make sure your electric blankets don't have any broken elements and check the batteries in your smoke alarms (of course you have smoke alarms - don't you).
We have had quite a busy year so far - 11 calls in the first four months, but fortunately, it has quieted down in the last 6 weeks - after all, every time we go out, it means someone is in trouble - which is not a nice thing to happen to anyone.
For those newcomers in the village, remember the roads around here can get icy in the winter - so take extra care on the corners.
On Wednesday 17th July, we will be holding our AGM, at 7:30 p.m. in the fire station (behind the telephone exchange next to the shop). All are welcome to attend. You may not know, but there are two sides to the fire brigade - operations and management. We need to create a new community-based management committee, and that will be on the agenda at the AGM.
Anyone who would like to be part of that committee, please put your name forward to Peter Harding (3628 108) or myself (3628 105).
Our operations side has three vacancies - due to people leaving the village. Operations ride the big red truck! So if you're over 16 years of age, reasonably fit, and want to be trained in firefighting skills (you will gain NZQA credits in certain areas) - please contact me on 3628 105.
We are totally volunteer and rely on the community for support and personnel - so the future of the fire brigade really is in your hands.
Take care out there,
Dave Field
Chief Fire Officer
