Clearly, there have been no headline-grabbing scenes, nothing particularly spectacular, and very pleased we are with that too because disasters produce no winners, only suffering, loss and tragedy.
People are probably not always aware of the variety of things we find ourselves committed to. Not all that is done is seen.
In the last few months, the Fire-Force has attended/assisted at:–
5 Vehicle accidents
5 False alarms
2 Fires at Tarawera
1 Rubbish fire (getting out of control)
1 overheating alarm at L.O. telephone exchange
and made 34 Water deliveries, each of which takes 2 people an hour, even before the drying, rolling and packing of hoses.
The 5 False Alarms since Easter have tried our patience and caused much frustration, but we have now been assured that the problem has been identified and rectified. The fault was not at Okareka, nor Rotorua, but originated from West Auckland, where a fire station had been allocated a radio-operated-siren code similar to ours but on Channel Six (not Channel Nine). However, the equipment on Mt. Edgecumbe failed to separate these Channels, and the Auckland problem became ours.
We shall soon be holding "Beginners Nights" at the L.O. Fire Station, and everyone is very welcome to come along. Meanwhile, your committee members are always available and happy to explain the workings of the Fire Force.

Once again, many thanks to the Lake Okareka community for all the extra effort and support you have given during the last year.
