Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - June 1990

A “bits and pieces” article this time, but hopefully with a modicum of coherence. Most of you are aware of what goes on when the station doors fly open and we depart with the bit between our teeth. Hopefully, you participate. The pieces part is much more low-key. It’s the steady, unrelenting 52 weeks a year effort to hunt down pieces of equipment from sources where it has become surplus to requirements but is still of some consequence in the right hands… ours! All this represents great savings for the community, which reminds me – does anyone have a pair of bolt cutters they no longer need?
  • The annual competitions between the fire parties of Okareka, Rotoiti and Tarawera were held at Rotoiti on April 1st, with Okareka acquitting itself and bringing home the shield for the “Best Maintained Equipment.” We felt no shame at being (slightly) beaten by our neighbours over the hill at Tarawera. They are good.
  • Water tanks – Don’t neglect them! We are not on mains supply yet, and several will undoubtedly expire before then. Pre-action is infinitely better than reaction. Also, a reticulated water supply will not diminish the need for a local fire party; from a Civil Defence perspective alone, we are significant.
  • There has been an instance this year of “it’s only small, I’m sure we can handle it, no need to dial 111 just yet.” Try not to think that way—no one will be blamed for being cautious.
  • The LORFFF A.G.M. will be held later in the year on the same day as the Ratepayers’ A.G.M., which should prove to be more convenient for everyone.

Now for the interesting bit (or is it a piece?) We are planning to hold a WINTER SOCIAL EVENING at the hall on SATURDAY 28TH JULY… dinner, music, wine, entertainment—partly to raise funds for our Fire Force, mostly to raise spirits by getting together for a good time. These events have become increasingly rare lately. We are not short of ideas, but we can take on a few more; you tell us what you would like to see and do.

Contact any Committee member. Participating musicians will be welcomed—the more, the better, in fact. We will also need some assistance with some aspects of the catering—if anyone has a few spare trout (or ducks), we can use them. So at last the LAMBADA comes to Okareka, perhaps.

(Hands up those who think it’s a mutton hamburger!) You’ll be hearing more from us… lots more.
