Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - (First Aid Post) - June 1991

Now the winter months are with us and a reduction in outside activities, the call on "The First Aid Post" has fallen. But winter brings its own problems, that of ice on the roads, and with the ice comes the increased risk of a skid. So please drive carefully and "Belt up". Motor Vehicle crashes are the greatest cause of death to young persons (15-24 years) in the Bay of Plenty. In fact the figure for B.O.P. youth are 42% higher than anywhere else in N.Z. - WHY? We don't know but we are trying to isolate the reason.

The number of motor vehicle crashes has had a flow-on effect to our Fire Force, who are now being called on to provide "First response" assistance, which they have done in a very efficient manner. Further to the Fire Force credit, John Hewstone is now listed as a Rural Responder with Hamilton Ambulance Control. This means in times when a general call-out is not required, John will arrange the necessary person power and equipment.

The spate of accidents that have affected the lives of Lake Okareka residents over the past months, resulted in the running of a First-Aid course at the community hall. From the initial 25 who started, 20 successfully completed the course and were awarded their certificates on the 2nd May. The importance of such knowledge was dramatically proved, when the life of a young Okareka resident was saved by the action of one of the course members. It was pleasing to see the action did not go unnoticed by the local news media.

During May, Okareka played host to the South Waikato Ambulance competitions, and again our Fire Force and residents were their actively participating. Competitors and Judges alike thoroughly enjoyed the event and wish to come back again. "Well done Okareka".

Street Numbers. There is a need for ALL residents to have clearly visible house numbers at the road side, to facilitate emergency services finding the correct address, this is particularly important at night. Suitable reflectorised numbers are available at minimal cost. Even with street numbers, if you have an emergency try and get someone to stand by the roadside to guide the emergency service to your location.

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Karen Wilkins to Lakes Okareka. Karen is an Ambulance Officer who has recently transferred from Tokoroa to Rotorua, and is now a resident of Steep Street. As well as her ambulance qualifications, Karen is a registered nurse and holds a private helicopter license.

Finally if you have an accident or medical emergency, don't hesitate in calling Ambulance Emergency on 111, and then phone the first-aid post at 28137 or 28693 (Day or Night). Karen has agreed to help with the First-Aid Post, hence the two numbers.
