Well, I’m pleased to report that we have had a quiet time in the last few months – the only major incident being the scrub fire on Tarawera Road. Whilst a permit had been obtained for the fire on the farm, the wind direction at the time the fire was lit caused burning debris to be blown into the low scrub on the opposite side of Tarawera Road, starting a secondary fire which fortunately was brought under control before it could spread into the forestry block. The lesson there is – although you have a permit for your fire, check all the factors (wind direction, surrounding fuels, scrub, rubbish, etc) and make sure there is a hose nearby in case it all goes wrong before you light the fire.
We are training hard for the 3 Lakes Pump Competition which will be held at Rotoiti in the near future. This is really a fun day out – so anyone who wants to be involved is more than welcome to join in.
Our building project is proceeding through the corridors of the RDC system – it hasn’t really taken forever to get the permit – it just seems like it!! In the near future we will actually see some building activity which will result in a revised front entrance for the fire station and a training/committee room built inside.
Lastly, with a number of our younger members going to university, etc – and congratulations to them – we are looking for more people to join up and fill the gaps! We meet at the fire station every Wednesday at 7.30 pm. Call in to see us and have a chat – we’d be very pleased to see you there.
