Seasons Greetings
Yet another year nearly over, and a very productive one at that.
The brigade now has a Dodge fire appliance in commission which has proved to be a very suitable replacement for the old Ford. For ease of responding to callouts, a new sectional door and electric opener has been installed at the station. Shelving for storage of gear is on the list for our next working bee, along with replacing the old clearlite on the roof.
Recently, members of our brigade were invited to participate in a Department of Conservation fitness test. This involved a 4.8km walk carrying a 20.5kg weighted back pack. In order to pass the test, this walk had to be completed within 45 minutes. If this sounds easy then perhaps you should give it a go. I’m thrilled to say that all members from our brigade who took part in the fitness test passed – while several people from other fire forces did not complete within the required time. Well done, guys!!
Now summer is supposedly here, let’s be vigilant in spotting signs of fires ‑ especially those in and around the old ski club. Having visited this building recently and seen the state of disrepair, as well as evidence of fires being lit not only on the beach close to the bush but also inside the building, creates cause for concern.
Given the topography of this area (down hill of Millar Road, prone to a prevailing souwesterly wind, in close proximity to the bush and the condition of the access track) makes this area a potential hazard. Hence, early warning from those residents who have a view of this area is paramount. An ugly black scar on the landscape takes a long time to heal, so remember, prevention is better than cure.
