Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - December 1998

Well, we know that summer has arrived - suddenly we are getting called out to motor vehicle accidents involving visitors to the area - so time for extra care on our local roads! For those of you who think the lake level is high, it must be really high. Recently, we were called to a flood on the lake side of Ridge Road - just about the highest point of the village.

The extension to the fire station is well advanced with the fitting of the new one-piece door. Both vehicles are now back “home” and I am sure Graham and Dot will be relieved that they no longer have to explain to their visitors why they have a fire engine parked in their back garden (“but then doesn’t everybody?”). Seriously though, many thanks to Graham and Dot for the use of their backyard during the rebuilding of the fire station.

You may not know that we have oxygen at the fire station. This is available for any medical emergency - just ask at the store. We were pleased to find out that New Zealand Fire Service have decided it’s a good idea to carry oxygen on their fire trucks - we have been doing this for the past 10 years!

I have mentioned before about our radio communication problems - as you can see from the article below we are not alone in that area.

Finally, take care over Christmas and the New Year, keep an eye on barbecues, Christmas lights, etc. Just make sure that when the quaint old man in the funny red suit comes into your house in the middle of the night - it’s not me followed by two firemen in breathing apparatus!

Season’s Greetings and kind regards.

Some light relief to brighten up your day...
This is the transcript of the ACTUAL radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland as released by the Chief of Naval Operations.
Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.
