Over the winter we have been quite busy, mainly with motor vehicle accidents. One in particular raised an important issue – locating the accident. We were given the location as ‘The junction of Tarawera Road and Okareka Loop Road. Two vehicles involved - persons trapped.’ This meant it was quite urgent to get there. Now – there are two junctions of Tarawera Road/Loop Road—which one do we go to?
In the event, ambulance, Rotorua Fire, and ourselves all went to Blue Lake Junction – wrong place. Back to Quarry Junction – still no signs of an accident. Eventually, the accident was located along the Loop Road by the entrance to the quarry. Please, Please, Please be as precise as possible when reporting the location of an incident – it could mean somebody’s life.
We have some new equipment and revamped some existing gear. We now have a portable generator and floodlights, a new short loader, and a new chainsaw – and before anybody gets any ideas, we are the Fire Brigade, not the Hire Brigade – so don’t even ask! The Landcruiser has been fitted with a water tank and generally reworked to make it a more useful appliance, so you can expect to see it out and about a bit more.
We have had problems with people following the fire truck and turning up to incidents in their own cars. Please don’t do this – it causes extra problems at the scene and, on at least one occasion, prevented the Rotorua truck from getting access because the roadway was blocked with parked cars. Not a good situation!
Finally – NEW MEMBERS REQUIRED. We are a volunteer organisation and rely totally upon people coming forward to join up. We will be organising some special introduction and induction sessions—so if you are at all interested, please contact us:
Dave Field (362 8105), Peter Harding (362 8108), or Peter Wilson (362 8398).
