Lake Ōkāreka Newsletter - September 1998

G'day

Well, another quiet period for us. However, our training continues on Wednesday nights and I am pleased to report that we have 17 keen and enthusiastic members.

The extensions to the fire station are going well — don't forget the working bees at the weekends until the project is finished. See Graham at the store for details of what you can do to help.

The big news for us is that Rotorua District Council have passed their rural fire responsibility to New Zealand Fire Service. In short, that means we have new mentors whose primary role is fire fighting and suppression. The indicators are all good so far with talk of upgrading our Ford fire truck and our radio communications, better and more available supplies of equipment, training with the professional fire fighters and a broader spectrum of operations to give us more activity. We believe all of these things can only be a plus for the Lake Okareka community. All our community owned equipment will of course be retained under the "status quo".

In case you are concerned about fire cover whilst the fire station is being modified, all the equipment is still secure, the Ford fire truck is parked at the store and the Toyota is in a lock-up garage in Summit Road so we are still fully operational. Also, my thanks to those property owners for use of their space in the meantime.

We have another pumping competition coming up soon — more details as soon as available — but we need to get our trophies back from Ngongotaha so any volunteers would be welcomed!!

That's all from me for now — just take care on those roads.
